There are still people in this world who have no idea that civilization exists. On remote islands in the Bay of Bengal live mysterious tribes. The five-foot high black skinned Andaman islanders are rumoured by sailors to be cannibals. Their origins are mysterious, but this film reveals how modern DNA analysis suggests that these ancient people have close links to Africa, from where they have been separated for 100,000 years. The Andamanese people are the various aboriginal inhabitants of the Andaman Islands, a district of India located in the southeastern part of the Bay of Bengal. The Andamanese have been classified as Negritos, together with a few other isolated groups in Asia by raciologist theories. They are pygmies, and are the only modern people outside Africa with steatopygia. They have a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and appear to have lived in substantial isolation for thousands of years. This degree of isolation is unequaled, except perhaps by the aboriginal inhabitants of Tasmania. The Andamanese are believed to be descended from the migrations which, about 60,000 years ago, brought modern humans out of Africa to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. By the end of the 18th century, when they first came into sustained contact with outsiders, there were an estimated 7,000 Andamanese divided into five major groups. Each group had distinct cultures, separate domains and mutually unintelligible languages. In the next century they were largely wiped out by diseases, violence, and loss of territory. Today, there remain only around 400--450 Andamanese. One group has long been extinct, and only two of the remaining groups still maintain a steadfast independence, refusing most attempts at contact by outsiders. By the end of the 18th century there were an estimated 5,000 Great Andamanese living on Great Andaman, comprising 10 distinct tribes with distinct languages. The population quickly dwindled, reaching a low of 19 by 1961. It has increased slowly after that, following their move to a reservation on Strait Island. By January 2011, there were only 54 individuals from three tribes, who spoke mostly Hindi. The Jangil, who originally inhabited Rutland Island, were extinct by 1931; the last individual was sighted in 1907. Only the Sentinelese are still living in their original homeland on North Sentinel Island, largely undisturbed, and have fiercely resisted all attempts at contact. The Andamanese are classified as Negritos (sometimes also called Proto-Australoids), together with the Semang of Malaysia and the Aeta of the Philippines. Their ancestors are thought to have arrived in the islands 60,000 years ago from coastal India (or crossed over a land bridge from Burma on what is now the Continental shelf of the northern Indian Ocean, during a glacial period. It is assumed that those ancestors were part of the initial Great Coastal Migration that was the first expansion of humanity out of Africa, via the Arabian peninsula, along the coastal regions of the Indian mainland and towards Southeast Asia, Japan and Oceania. Some anthropologists postulate that Southern India and Southeast Asia was once populated largely by Negritos similar to those of the Andamans, and that some tribal populations in the south of India, such as the Irulas are remnants of that period. Until the late 18th century, the Andamanese culture, language and genetics were preserved from outside influences by their fierce reaction to visitors, which included killing any shipwrecked foreigners, and by the remoteness of the islands. The various tribes and their mutually unintelligible languages are thus believed to have evolved on their own over millennia. In 1974, a film crew and anthropologist Trilokinath Pandit attempted friendly contact by leaving a tethered pig, some pots and pans, some fruit and toys on the beach at North Sentinel Island. One of the islanders shot the film director in the thigh with an arrow. The following year, European visitors were repulsed with arrows. On 2 August 1981, the ship Primrose grounded on the North Sentinel Island reef. A few days later, crewmen on the immobile vessel observed that small black men were carrying spears and arrows and building boats on the beach. The captain of the Primrose radioed for an urgent airdrop of firearms so the crew could defend themselves but did not receive them. On 4 January 1991, Indian scholar Trilokinath Pandit made the first known friendly contact with the Sentinelese. Until contact, the Andamanese were strict hunter-gatherers. They did not practice cultivation, and lived off hunting indigenous pigs, fishing, and gathering. Their only weapons were the bow, adzes and wooden harpoons. Besides the aboriginal people of Tasmania, the Andamanese were the only people who in the 19th century knew no method of making fire. They instead carefully preserved embers in hollowed-out trees from fires caused by lightning strikes. They are known as Chadda

More information about the video content bellow: 1. In the southern Pacific Ocean, few island nations enchant visitors quite like Tuvalu. Comprising nine small islands with a population of only about 10,000, Tuvalu is one of the smallest countries in the world. Formerly part of a larger area islands under British control, Polynesians on Tuvalu voted to separate from the Gilbert Island in 1974. Four years later, Tuvalu gained independence. 2. Funafuti Conservation Area is one of the best places to catch some beautiful natural sights including reefs, channel and a gorgeous lagoon. Thanks to its marine life diversity, it is an excellent spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. 3. Nui, Tuvalu is one of the most important islands in Tuvalu. The permanent settlement is on the main islet of Fenuatapu in Nui, Tuvalu. The Nui Island consists of 11 main islets. All the islets are separated by passages. The sea gushes through the passages from ocean to the lagoon. During low tide, people can walk across these passages from islet to islet. 4. The National Research Council in the United States predicted that by 2100 global sea levels would rise 55 inches due to climate change. If that prediction holds true, the rising sea levels could damage the country’s coral roots and wipe out Tuvalu altogether. By 2012, there was already coastal erosion, a result of the rising sea level, excavation for construction, and extreme weather. 5. The origins of the people of Tuvalu are addressed in the theories regarding migration into the Pacific that began about 3000 years ago. During pre-European-contact times there was frequent canoe voyaging between the nearer islands including Samoa and Tonga. Eight of the nine islands of Tuvalu were inhabited; thus the name, Tuvalu, means "eight standing together" in Tuvaluan. Possible evidence of fire in the Caves of Nanumanga may indicate human occupation for thousands of years. 6. The tiny island-nation of Tuvalu receives a yearly payment of almost $2.2 million for doing nothing at all. The is the money that the Tuvalu government receives from royalties from the country’s domain name, .tv! This ammount is about ten per cent of the government's total revenue. Domain name income paid most of the cost of paving the streets of Funafuti and installing street lighting in mid-2002. 7. Parents and children in Tuvalu usually do not have cordial relationships. However, relationships between grandparents and grandchildren, adoptive parents and adoptive children, and mother’s brother and sister’s child tend to be warm and affectionate. Within the family, you will notice that there is the most constrained cross-sex interaction between siblings, first, second, and even third cousins. Even today, they have to avoid each other totally except for things considered most necessary. http://www.euronews.com/ The global art market is worth 43 billion euros annually, according to the European Fine Art Foundation's latest report. Europe's share of the market is 36 percent, followed by the US and China, with the emerging countries showing strong growth in recent years. How is the market reacting to the international economic crisis, who are the new players, how are tax laws affecting sales? Euronews asked these questions to Guillaume Cerutti, CEO of the auctioneer Sotheby's France and deputy CEO of Sotheby's Europe, in this interview recorded at his Paris headquarters. *Giovanni Magi, euronews:* "To what extent does the economic crisis affect the international art market? *Guillaume Cerutti:* "The economic crisis is affecting the international art market, like all sectors, but in a relative or differentiated way, because the art market has special characteristics. This market is very surprising: it is a market where there are only individuals, individual collectors and individual objects. These are very special characteristics. And therefore faced with a crisis, we see that masterpieces, rare works with a prestigious provenance, large paintings, are not affected by the crisis. On the contrary, they are more sought-after by big collectors. In contrast, objects of lesser value, interesting paintings, but of less marked value, can be affected by the crisis and their estimates should at this point be extremely precise to enable us to sell them. So, the crisis has a differentiated impact depending on the quality and importance of the object." *euronews:* "There have been some auctions where works reach incredible prices. Is art always a good investment or there is the risk of a bubble effect, as in the stock market?" *Cerutti:* "It is true that the major auctions have been breaking records. Last year, for example, Sotheby's in New York sold a work of Eduard Munch, 'The Scream', a famous work, for more than $120 million. The works of Picasso sold at auction in Paris, for example a portrait of Dora Maar, went for seven million euros. It is true that these figures suggest that the art market is a somewhat protected area, a safe haven in times of crisis. The reality is more nuanced of course, because again there are areas where there are fewer buyers and worries about the global economic situation may be felt." *euronews:* "Is the art market increasingly reserved for the elites, the very rich?" * Cerutti:* "The art market is actually composed of several markets. If you take the great impressionist and modern paintings, the prices for masterpieces are often very high and to answer to your question, then it is, yes. To purchase an important painting by Picasso takes a lot of resources. At the same time, there are domains in the art market where you can make acquisitions at very low prices. For example, engravings: you can buy a work by Picasso, which is a true original, because it is one of very few copies engraved by an important engraver, for a few hundred euros. We had a sale in Paris at the end of February, of works from the engraver Crommelynck, where extraordinary works of Picasso sold for a few hundred euros." *euronews:* "What kind of artwork is the most prized by your clients?" *Cerutti:* "The twentieth century art is undeniably the largest on the market today. Impressionism, modern art, the art of the postwar period, it is in these areas that the highest prices are made. Some other sectors have experienced in recent years a very rapid development, such as the arts of Africa and Oceania, which have become a very important sector of the market. Another area that has seen a dramatic development is Asian art. Only a dozen years ago, the art market was a market reserved primarily for Western clients: Europeans and Americans. In recent years Asian buyers, including the Chinese, came to the market with a huge appetite for buying works of their history, imperial works, seals, jades and ceramics, and we have seen this market also develop very quickly." *euronews:* "Who are your customers? Is their profiles changing?" Find us on: Youtube http://bit.ly/zr3upY Facebook http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter http://twitter.com/euronews
